Au cœur du Hodh Ech Chargui, à quelques kilomètres de la frontière malienne, dort aujourd&rsquo;hui sous le sable la cité de <strong>Koumbi Saleh</strong>, capitale de l&rsquo;Empire du Ghana, aussi appelé <strong>Wagadou</strong>.</p></div>

<div class="wp-block-premium-text premium-text-78b9fb49825a premium-text"><p class="premium-text-wrap">Capitale de l&rsquo;Empire du Ghana à partir du IVe siècle, Koumbi Saleh fut localisée au sud de l&rsquo;actuelle Mauritanie. Au XIe siècle, sa population avoisinait les 30 000 habitants, un chiffre vertigineux pour une région où chaque puits était une victoire. Le géographe arabe <strong>Al-Bakri</strong>, qui décrit la ville en 1067, raconte une cité double : un quartier royal animiste et un quartier marchand musulman doté de douze mosquées.</p></div>



<div class="wp-block-premium-text premium-text-4b6c88656c5d premium-text"><p class="premium-text-wrap">La richesse de Koumbi Saleh reposait sur un commerce d&rsquo;or contre du sel. Les caravanes de dromadaires reliaient les mines aurifères du Bambouk et du Bouré aux marchés du Maghreb, en passant par une autre cité majeure de l&rsquo;actuelle Mauritanie : <strong>Aoudaghost</strong> (le site archéologique de Tegdaoust). Tissus, cuivre, dattes, sel saharien, perles de verre, kola : tout transitait par ces villes-relais.</p></div>



<div class="wp-block-premium-text premium-text-f5ee74569bb3 premium-text"><p class="premium-text-wrap">L&#8217;empire décline à partir du XIe siècle, sous la pression des Almoravides venus du nord. Mais l&rsquo;héritage demeure : les <strong>Soninkés</strong> d&rsquo;aujourd&rsquo;hui, présents au Guidimakha et au Gorgol, sont les descendants directs des bâtisseurs de cette puissance africaine pré-coloniale.</p></div>
